What is OBD ECU Remapping

ECU Remapping via the OBD Port (on board diagnostics) is the most commonly used method for ECU Remapping, we simply connect a laptop via an interface to the vehicles OBD Port and by doing this we can access the ECU memory where the data for controling the engine is stored.

Some of the advantages of using OBD ECU Remapping are;

  • no additional units/devices
  • no visable sign of being done
  • quick and easy to do
  • no need to open ECU

Through the OBD Port we firstly take a copy of the ECU Data this is saved and if requiried to put back to original it is no problem, from here we load into a HEX editing software where we can locate the tables of data known as maps (hence the name ECU Remapping) for various things such as fuelling, boost pressure, timing and many more optimise the settings and then we can program the ECU with the new settings.

once the new settings are loaded then we carry out full data logging session to ensure the vehicle is running to its full potential and that there is no problems.

ECU Remapping via BDM

Another method of ecu remapping on vehicles fitted with ecu that contains a Motorola MPC555 - 565 processors is via a BDM Module. This BDM module can read and program 3 data areas on the ecu the processor, eprom and eeprom it is a very safe way of chiptuning ECU’s giving the user a full back up copy of ecu data.

the bdm module also comes in very handy for recovering ecu’s after a bad flash via obd ecu remapping here at mas performance we keep the bdm module in our  tool box not only for this reason but also for when an ecu cannot be read though the obd socket so ecu remapping can always be done.

ecu remapping chip removal

here we are going to run through what is involed when a vehicle cannot be tuned via the OBD socket.

first of all the ecu needs to be removed this can range from very easy to extremely dificult!

now the ecu is out the cover can be opened to gain access to the circuit board and the chip can be removed. in this bosch ecu this is the chip we are interested in.

chip

now we need to add some flux to the solder joints to aid in removing the chip and use a hot air desoldering station to remove the chip from the board.

once the chip has been successfully removed from the ecu we can use an adaptor to read original data and program new data on to the chip using an eprom programmer.

once we have the tuned data on the chip the board needs to be cleaned and prepared do the new chip can be soldered to the ecu.

new chip fitted

new chip fitted

now the new chip is fitted the ecu can be put back togeather and fitted to the vehicle, this form of ecu remapping looks very complicated but to a professional tuner it is usually a daily operation.
